William Churchman du Pont, age 64, died of natural causes in Beverly, MA on December 29th, 2020.
"Willie", as he was affectionately known to everyone, was the son of longtime Fairfield, CT residents F. George du Pont and Beatrice Churchman du Pont. The youngest of five children, Willie is survived by nine nephews and nieces and his four siblings; Jean Blair of New Orleans, LA, F. George du Pont Jr. of Guilford CT; David du Pont of Tuxedo Park, NY, and Henry du Pont of Block Island, RI.
Willie was a graduate of St George’s School in Newport RI, Marlboro College in Marlboro, VT, and Arizona State University in Tempe, where he received a master’s degree in Environmental Science. He specialized in the study of the properties of building materials and was instrumental in developing testing processes for the measurement of light and heat transfer through windows, which are used today by national window standards rating laboratories.
In addition to his concern for everything environmental, especially climate change due to global warming, Willie’s other interests included photography, marine navigation, and bird watching. An active sportsman, Willie engaged in biking, kayaking, cross country skiing, and sailing in which Willie showed great proficiency in every sailing vessel from a windsurfer to his family’s custom built 45-foot sloop “Waupi” which he owned and sailed out of Annapolis, MD.
Willie was endlessly kind and loyal and will be deeply missed by his family and friends. There will be a memorial service at the family cemetery in Montchanin, DE. at a time to be announced.
