Obituary

Thomas “Tom” Francis Winter Jr. died of colon cancer on Wednesday July 5, 2023, surrounded by the love of his family and friends. Tom, the oldest of two boys, was born on January 11, 1971 to the late Thomas F. Winter Sr. and Joan (Packer) McDuff in Wakefield.

Thomas was raised by his parents in the towns of the North and South Shores in Massachusetts. Tom’s grandmother owned a picturesque family cottage on Cedar Point in Scituate and he enjoyed visiting during the summer weekends and watching the annual Labor Day parade, as well as many family celebrations including Tom & Michelle’s wedding in July 2006. Also, he was proud to buy a home on Brant Rock in Marshfield, where he took flying lessons and got his pilot license in the 1990’s.

Tom graduated from South Shore Vocational-Technical School and he was an accomplished Expert Technician who worked on Volvo automobiles for over 30 years. In 2007, Tom competed with other Volvo Expert Technicians and won an amazing trip to Gothenburg, Sweden. Tom and Michelle traveled back to Sweden for a wonderful vacation. Most recently, Thomas had started his own business as a successful contractor with Hunter Engineering.

For many years, Tom was a private pilot who flew his own Piper Warrior airplane out of Taunton Municipal Airport. Tom, Michelle, and Amelia enjoyed may hours traveling to their favorite destinations in New England. Tom and Michelle flew to Wiscasset Maine and had a memorable vacation with Michelle’s parents. Also, Tom and Michelle flew for three hours to attend Sentimental Journey Fly-In in Lockhaven, Pennsylvania.

Tom, Michelle, and Amelia enjoyed family vacations to Disney World, Santa’s Village, Story Land, Mystic, Cape Cod and many New England states. Amelia’s first flight on Tom’s plane was at six months of age. Their most treasured trips were to Tom’s favorite destination, Martha’s Vineyard where they flew onto the grass runway at Katama Airport in Edgartown. Tom especially enjoyed visiting lighthouses, beaches, gingerbread houses, Oak Bluffs carousel and attending the Fourth of July parade & fireworks.

He is survived by his loving wife of almost 17 years, Michelle Winter, and his ten year-old daughter, Amelia Hope Winter. Tom was a caring, dedicated father to his daughter and a loving husband. He was predeceased by his grandparents, father and brother Richard Winter of Cor D’Alene, Idaho. In addition to his immediate family, he will be missed by his mother-in-law Marilyn Mowatt of Easton and brother-in-law Michael Mowatt of Waltham, as well as his aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends who mostly reside on the North Shore.

Thomas will be deeply missed by his family and friends. His love of flying, work ethic, humor, dedication to his family, and love of ice cream made him one of a kind.

Visitation will be held in the Southeast Funeral Home, 93 Center St., Easton, MA on Monday, July 17th from 4:00PM - 7:00PM and Tuesday July 18th from 10:00AM-11:00AM. A Funeral Service will follow in the funeral home on Tuesday, July 18th at 11:00AM.  Relatives and Friends respectfully invited to attend.

In lieu of flowers, Tom’s wish is for donations to be made to either the American Cancer Society or AOPA (Aircraft Owners and Pilot Association) Foundation.
