Janet Gilmore Obituary

Janet Skinner Gilmore, 91, passed away peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, MA on Wednesday, October 5, 2022. Born in Brockton Massachusetts, the daughter and only child of Charles Wesley Skinner and Eugenia Barnes Skinner. Former wife of the late Robert Ames Gilmore of North Easton MA.

Janet showed a talent for drawing and painting at a young age, and after graduating from BrocktonHigh School in 1949, studied at Massachusetts College of Art. When her children were older, she resumed her studies, receiving a BFA degree in 1972.

She had studied piano as a child and taught herself to play many difficult classical pieces, with Chopin being a favorite. She taught classes in portraiture and painting at Cape Cod Art Association and the Creative Arts Center in Chatham, and others. Janet exhibited her work widely at galleries and art shows, as well as her gallery in Yarmouthport and received many awards. Her distinctive impressionist paintings in oil and watercolor are marked by vivid color, many depicting the landscape of the Cape and Nantucket, where she spent many summers, painting from nature and in the towns. Some of her favorite experiences as an artist were the painting excursions to France and Quebec. She was a member of the Yarmouth Art Guild and Cape Cod Art Association. Her home on Bass River and family were often subjects for her work. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking, and knitting and would often accompany herself on the piano, singing popular songs with her beautiful voice. She instilled in her children a love of music, art, dance and nature. Her gentle nature and creativity have been an inspiration for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and all she came to know.

She lovingly leaves behind 8 children. Amanda Barabe of South Yarmouth, MA, Predeceased by Robert B. Gilmore of Boston, MA and his twin brother Jon S. Gilmore of North Easton, MA. Pamela Gilmore Hill of Brockton, MA, Holly Haas and her husband David of Myrtle Beach, SC, Julie Gilmore of Brewster, MA, Peter Gilmore of Middleboro, MA, Keith Gilmore and his wife Cheryl of Osterville, MA, Daughter in law Sheryl Gilmore of Ohio, wife of the late Jon S. Gilmore. She also leaves behind 15 grandchildren, Rachael, Bobby, Joey, Matthew, Ben, Tanya, Lora, Cassandra, Jennie, Danny, Alexa, Anna, Kyle, Nathaniel and Ethan and 8 great grandchildren, Ashlyn, Joshua, Noah, Molly, Adriana, Brock, Augustus and Bellamy and her companion and friend, Harry Coon.
