David Scott Hosom, 88, of Falmouth, MA, died at home on June 8, 2022. He was the husband of Dorothea C. Hosom for 64 years.
He was born in Lancaster, OH, to Orville Scott Hosom and Florence Ewing Hosom. While attending high school he was actively involved in the Boy Scouts and, while attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, developed a life-long interest in tent camping. Mr. Hosom graduated from the University of Cincinnati’s electrical engineering program in 1957. After moving to New York, he earned an M.S. in electrical engineering from the Polytechnic Institute of Brooklyn as well as an M.S. in marine science from Long Island University.
Joining the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in 1971, he was a Research Associate in the Department of Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering until being hired by Benthos, Inc. as Chief Engineer in 1979. Upon returning to WHOI in 1985, he continued working in various capacities in Applied Ocean Physics and Engineering until retiring from his post as Principal Engineer in 2004.
An accomplished woodworker, he particularly enjoyed woodturning. At age 50 he began Uechi Ryu karate and earned a third-level black belt. At 70 he started playing the Great Highland Pipes and was a member of the Brian Boru Pipe Band.
He leaves his daughter Johanna Roveto and her husband Peter Roveto of Duxbury, his son John-Paul Hosom and his wife Tiffany Gates of Portland, OR, his grandchildren Matthew and Julia Roveto, and a cousin Marilyn Bush of Byrdstown, TN. A private family celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
